20040826not-all-jerks-blackI'm not as politically active as some of the people whose blogs I regularly peruse... but as the time draws nearer and I continue to read more and more about the situation, I find the idea of the Bush administration for another four years more and more alarming. Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft... they're in a position to really create a major change in the direction of this country for decades to come.

I spoke with a friend last night who said they weren't going to be voting. For the first time possibly ever, I found that troubling. I implore anyone who doesn't feel that the issues matter to them now- who doesn't feel like their vote can make a difference- read through this article and get a taste for what's going on here.

Ashcroft alone is enough to freak me out. I hope all the US citizens out there who plan to sit on the bleachers in November will take just a small amount of time to read about the people you'll be allowing to significantly reshape your country for the rest of your life.

I couldn't agree with you more. Hell, as a Canadian, I wish that I too could vote in November, because so much of what goes on south of the border has such a direct impact on us.

And this election is particular is extremely important. So please, get out and vote.

I love how conservatives are so quick to enforce Judeo-Christian values on every member of our nation and stand behind the founding fathers as justification for doing so. Haven't we learned through THOUSANDS of years of history that the single most influential motivator in war and unrest is religion? Notedly, the enforcement of a single state religion upon all the members of any given nation has been the motivation for murder, genocide, terrorism, and war. The beauty of our nation is our freedom - we're free to live our lives however we want and to believe in whatever we want. The true intellectuals of our nation (yeah, us folks in the universities so often bashed by heartland conservatives as elitist and crazy liberals) have embraced these ideas for decades. Time and time again, we've learned that by embracing the multitude of perspecitives on a problem that arise from a robust and diverse community, we discover the best solution. Why would our nation operate any differently? Why would the defiance of all logic an reasonable thought create a nation better able to succeed in the world? Sure, Suzie will have to risk her life in a back-alley abortion, Tom Gay and Bob Homo will be stripped of their freedoms, and all the dirty Muslims will be cast into new and exciting levels of poverty and social disgrace, but what happens when we face a challenge not addressed in the Bible? Jesus never gave us strategies for surviving nuclear attack and building an ark won't gain us any international allies.

I think we fail to recognise that as long as Ashcroft et al don't take away the TV and the Buffet, they can stay...its bread and circus all over again--and THAT is the lesson of thousands of years of history.
