This is just sort of a general reference for myself since I tend to forget these kinds of things and then rediscover them 2 years later, only to realize I had already known them before, but also blogged about them.

I love Safari. I know some hardcore geekasauruses will scoff and throw feces at me for admitting to such a thing, but you know what? I used IE back when it was way faster than Netscape, too. It's all a matter of speed for me, and even though FF3 is way way better, it's still slower than Safari on the mac. I use both, but my standby is Safari.

But wait- "way way better" comes out of my mouthfingers without thinking. Is it really? There are some key things that Safari lacks compared to Firefox that kept me more on the fence, but for some reason this past week or two, I've gone hunting and discovered completely viable equivalents. GreaseKit was the first, which brings all the GreaseMonkey joy I could want into Safari. I've been using SafariStand since the saloon days, but it's still a must-have. And now I've discovered AdBlock for Safari, which was the largest obvious missing piece.

So now I can surf sans-ads, tweaked as much as I could possibly want, and at least 25% faster than if I were using FF. (Not the page loads, persay, but tab operations and recovering from being swapped out when I keep it minimized for a couple of hours.) So hooray!

The only thing really missing now is something as luscious as Firebug was on Firefox 2. Ever since FF3, Firebug has started actually breaking pages I'm visiting, which sort of defeats the purpose. And the element inspector in Safari is tolerable but sort of meh, but at least it works. If anybody sees this and has a hint for me about getting Firefox 3 and Firebug to work happily with the script console enabled, please share.

p.s. Oh oh! Don't forget Google Gears support for Safari now! Although Webkit's support for HTML 5 data storage protocols kind of fills in my biggest desire from Gears, particularly since I'm using a tweaked PersistJS to deal with any of the persistent storage needs I have right now.
